You're not the only graduate student trying to successfully navigate their first semester at College Park. Hundreds of others are wondering what to do and where to start their new journey as well. Here's a short list of thoughts from other students like you who wanted to provide their insight and encouragement to help get you started. You are not alone!

An Open Mind

Keep an open mind and don't be trapped by preconceived notions. There is a whole new world to explore!

Hang in There

It may all seem overwhelming at first but hang in there, it will get better.

People Will Help

People will help you if you let them. Look to friends and find mentors.

Why You're Here

Understand why you made the choice to come to graduate school. You're here for a reason.

Read Your Email

Read your e-mails. There is a lot of good information in there. It's just a click away.

Go to Workshops

Take advantage of workshops and other resources. Chances are there's something out there you'll like.

Be Active

Be active in teams. Get to know your fellow students and participate to make a difference.

Use It or Lose It

Utilize the many university resources at your disposal. You're paying for them. You should use them.

Build Networks

Start building your networks as soon as possible. It's never too early to start to connect.

Get Physical

Engage in physical activity both on- and off-campus. There are many forms of recreation available nearby.

Ins & Outs

Be involved inside and outside your program. Meeting people from outside your discipline is a great learning opportunity.

Be Certified

Get certifications done while you have time. Once you get out of school, life can get in the way.

Find Your Class

Find where your classes are before the first day. Why add to your stress by not knowing where to go.

Locate Facilities

Know where the key facilities are on campus. It's always better to know before you actually need it.
